Let’s Dig Into Alchemy – replace.me – When And Why To Use Auto-tune

Alchemy has a flexible architecture and its wealth of modulation options can create sounds with a surprising sense of movement. Mark Cousins gets animated… Having a synthesiser as powerful and as flexible as Alchemy residing in Logic is a joy for any sound designer or musician working in the field of electronic music. From gritty […]. Mark Cousins gets animated…. Having a synthesiser as powerful and as flexible as Alchemy residing in Logic is a joy for any sound designer or musician working in the field of electronic music.
Put simply, movement is created using a variety of modulation sources — like an LFO, for example, or step sequencer — routed through to one or more destinations within the patch. The first choice for movement in a patch has to be a tempo-synced LFO, of which Alchemy can use multiple instances of in any single patch.
Often the most effective sounds, though, come from a small or moderate amount of depth, rather than the filter being modulated over its entire range. With Bipolar not activated, the LFO adds to the existing parameter level, rather working both positively and negatively on the current filter cutoff point.
Using a short attack and gate, for example, and moderate release, you can create a result not dissimilar to the default shape of the MSEG modulator. It might be, for example, that you use an LFO on the amplifier, modulate the filter using a complex MSEG and another LFO, while a parameter like reverb time is modulated using the step sequencer.
The fact that. Alchemy also supports a semi-modular architecture, including parallel and serial filters, means that you can create stunningly complicated patches, limited only by your imagination. Map velocity to your chosen parameter, and the arpeggiator can control anything from filter cutoff to panning. The arpeggiator itself contains the all-important Mode, Rate, Octave and Length controls, letting you move between a chugging eighth-note sequence, to swathes of 32nd notes spiralling through a chord.
Our basic starting point involves a single oscillator set to the sawtooth wave. Create some additional unison voices with a medium detune and ensure the filter is set to LP4 MG. Click on the drop-down menu and assign LFO1 to modulate the filter. Lower the cutoff and tweak the depth to get the desired amount of movement.
Under the drop-down menu in the Modulation section you can find an option to create a new LFO. The trick is to use a small amount of depth for the modulation, creating a subtle undulation effect. Logic Pro X Alchemy Manual. The Logic Fiends’ Guide to EDM on Logic Pro X – Logic Fiends
This book is a comprehensive introduction to professional music produc-tion with Logic Pro X. It uses real-world music and hands-on exercises to teach you how to record, edit, arrange, mix, produce, and polish audio and MIDI files in a professional workflow.
Granular is very powerful, useful, and innovative. A breeze to use. However, sampler mode and by association granular disappoints me somewhat. Alchemy is marketed as ‘the ultimate sample manipulation tool. Many courses on Logic Pro go through the production, editing and mixing side of the program, but do not explain the instruments in depth. Updated Brush tool Logic X manual, including Alchemy instructions. This carried over into my recent time upgrading to Logic x pro.
Long story short, I recently upgraded the ssd on my machine and decided to do a super clean. If you like to play in Logic Pro X, one of the most important things you can do is know how to autotune! Are your vocal performances coming out a little pitchy? Struggling to hit that high note?
Maybe you captured the ultimate performance with loads of soul and feeling, but it’s not quite fitting in the mix due to some slight pitch issues. Or, maybe you just want to be the next T-Pain, and apply some crazy pitch effects to your vocal recordings. Whatever the case, learning how to auto-tune in Logic Pro X is not only easy, but will become an invaluable tool in perfecting your vocal recordings, and taking your production to the next level!
Technically speaking, Auto-Tune is a piece of software created by Antares , but the effect has become so popularised in mainstream music that the name has kind of stuck. Typically, when producers, artists or listeners use the term auto tune, what they are talking about is pitch correction.
Auto click yes. This step is best performed after you have added some plugins to your other tracks, and have started getting the song whipped into shape! Pitch correction is a program or plugin used to correct off notes in vocals. Depending on the software, this can be done automatically or manually.
You’ll learn about some different options for using in auto tune in Logic soon. It can also be used as a creative effect, such is the case in a lot of modern hip-hop and RnB music, often dubbed the ‘T-Pain effect’. After you get the auto-tune nailed, you will be ready to go on and mix your tracks in Logic Pro X! Probably the most common use for auto-tune is to correct any off notes in a vocal performance.
It may seem like cheating to some, but actually this is an incredibly common technique. Just about every singer you hear on record these days especially in pop music has some form of pitch correction applied, and we’ve become so adapted to hearing perfectly sung melodies that it can even sound strange hearing an unprocessed vocalist! Popular in modern hip-hop and RnB, heavily autotuned vocals have become a regular feature used by rappers and vocalists in these genres.
Popularised by T-Pain in the early s, the sound is often referred to as the ‘T-Pain Effect’, so much so that iZotope has released a pitch correction tool that is literally called The T-Pain Effect. The goal here is to apply auto tune to a vocal performance that is far out of pitch or even monotonous , with the parameters at such extreme settings that the effects of the pitch correction plug-in are exceedingly obvious.
You’ll learn just how to do this very soon as well. A little known use for pitch correction is to take the original vocal recording which may already have had auto tune applied , and create a vocal harmony by changing the pitch of each note sung. This achieves an effect that is not anywhere near as natural as a sung harmony, but natural isn’t always what we are going for!
Given the wide variety of situations that pitch correction can be applied to, you can see why it’s an extremely vital skill to master. Not only will you be able to fix bung notes or seemingly unsalvageable performances to deliver a higher quality end result, but you’ll also be able to apply the effect more creatively to diversify the sound of your audio productions, and bang out tunes that sound just like your favourite artists!
This is why we love Logic Pro X, and why you should too: the suite of audio processing tools that come with the program as standard cover all the bases, and they are extremely effective. That means yes, yes it does. There are actually a couple of different tools in Logic Pro that you can use for vocal pitch correction, depending on your desired outcome.
We’re going to focus on using the first two options in Logic Pro X, and how you can get using auto-tune to create pro level tracks. On the desired audio track, head over to the left hand side and click on a free Audio FX slot. Rather well in fact. You’ll then want to select Normal or Low depending on the range of the sources.
As a general rule, select Normal for female vocals and Low for male vocals. Step 4: Now play the track back, and use the Response and Detune sliders to achieve the perfect auto tune effect. Response is a time based control, the lower the time, the faster the plug-in will react to incorrect pitches, and therefore the more noticeable the effect will be. Too fast, and the effect will be a robotic vocal sound. Detune should be adjusted if the track is consistently below or above the the centre of the bottom display.
Again, adjust til you find the sweet spot. Flex Pitch is a tool in Logic Pro X that allows you to adjust the pitch of a vocal performance note by note. That means you can select individual off notes to correct, rather than applying an effect over an entire track. This is a great idea if you are trying to get a more natural tone overall. Step 1: Vpn client pro ios. Zoom in on the vocal track, and you’ll see that Logic Pro has added some little blue boxes to the audio recording.
These denote the pitch of each note. From here, you can literally drag each of the blue boxes in your audio region to the desired pitch! The Pitch Correction plug-in in Logic Pro can be used in realtime, if you have a need to auto-tune vocals on the way in. Unfortunately the Flex Pitch function is a more manual approach, so if you like using correction on the way in, and Logic’s in built tool isn’t doing the trick, try some of these third-party plugins and see if they get you where you want to be.
So, now you’ve learned how to use Logic’s Pitch Correction tool to automatically alter a vocal performance, and the Flex Pitch function for a more manual, fine-tuned approach. Each source has three independent filters that can operate in parallel or in series. These sources are used to create and shape the basic tone of the sound. All modulation in this section applies per voice. There are two main filters that can operate in parallel or in series. The main filters are used to shape or otherwise alter the combined sound from the four sources. See Alchemy main filter controls in Logic Pro.
After the individual voices are mixed together and filtered, they pass through the effects stage. Then trim, loop and play the result as well as adjust basic sound shaping controls. The Step Sequencer is a colorful pattern-based sequencer with detailed control over note velocity, repeate, gate, skip, playback direction and randomization. You can play that in real time or program it with the new step sequencer. I watched the video for the Additive Editor and I was just gobsmacked. And that’s one feature Glad you all are digging the thread, if you find something fun or cool in Alchemy, please share!
I added the link to the OP, but the list of changes to Alchemy is pretty good reading, so here it is. New features and enhancements in the version of Alchemy introduced in Logic Pro X The following is a list of the primary changes. Nice thread! Attached Thumbnails. Thanks Teemeister, OP updated. If you want to get to the heart of what makes Alchemy different to most synths watch videos 10 and 11 of Dan Worrall’s series on You tube.
There he explains the different modes of resynthesis of samples and their various pros and cons. But it is this resynthesis – granular, additive and spectral which really make Alchemy different and where you can creatively mangle samples.
The rest of it will be familiar from other synths – filters and envelopes, although understanding the modulation is the other thing you need to master, which is quite straightforward one you grasp the basic system. But the flexible modulation combined with resynthesis can really take your samples to a unique and interesting place. That, for me, is the best way of thinking about Alchemy. Funk Dracula. Alchemy is one synth that has always been on my radar, but I never picked up.
I’ve been too busy in my own little corner of the biz to have even caught wind of the acquisition by Apple. Thank you Apple? I’m looking forward to locking myself in a room, and completely geeking out the next few weeks with this new synth and all there is to learn about it. Introduced in Logic Pro Filling the gap between sampling and synthesis, Alchemy is uniquely positioned, providing Logic users with novel ways to create heretofore-unheard sounds and instruments. By combining such advanced sound generation technologies as granular, spectral, and additive synthesis, Alchemy allows you to manipulate audio to unprecedented levels.
